The project will provide significant economic and environmental benefits and is considered to be the largest private investments ever in Maryland.

Estimated to cost between $3.4bn and $3.8bn, the Cove Point LNG export project is expected to create construction jobs and an additional $40m in annual tax revenue to Calvert County.

Dominion Energy business unit president Diane Leopold said: "The Cove Point LNG export project will help meet the world’s need to move toward cleaner fuels.

"At the same time, it will provide significant economic benefits in terms of thousands of construction jobs, hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenues over the life of the facility, and an outlet for some of the nation’s surplus natural gas supplies."

A comprehensive three-year regulatory review approval process has been carried out to ensure the project meets all safety, environmental and other requirements.

The project aims to transport up to 860,000 dekatherms per day of natural gas from existing pipeline interconnects near the west end of the Cove Point Pipeline to the Cove Point terminal for the export of up to 5.75 metric tons of liquefied natural gas per year.
The proposed export facility is scheduled to enter service in late 2017.
