The company will request regulators to accept its proposal to build the gas-fired plant near Lawrenceville in the county, reported The Associated Press.

The project is expected to create over 500 temporary construction jobs and 40 permanent and full time jobs.

Subject to regulatory approval, Dominion is anticipating the power station would be completed by the second quarter of 2016.

The residential user of the electricity generated from the plant will have to pay an initial increase of 83 cents. The new bill will be charged from 1 September.

The Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club is resisting and opposing the new plant, stating that Dominion should instead try and generate cleaner electricity from other sources, such as solar and wind.
