Planned to be built in approximately 57km off the north-west coast of Germany, the Borkum Riffgrund 2 project is located adjacent to the 312MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm. It is expected to generate clean electricity to serve 460,000 German households.

MHI Vestas Offshore CEO Jens Tommerup said: "We are especially proud that Dong Energy have highlighted the performance of the V164-8.0 MW turbine as a decisive factor in choosing MHI Vestas as preferred supplier for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 project, and that the commitment of MHI Vestas to the competitive tender will support Dong Energy’s cost reduction targets."

Dong Energy plans to sign a firm and unconditional agreement for the V164-8MW turbines later this year subject to final investment decision.

DONG Energy Wind Power executive vice president Samuel Leupold said: "If we should decide to build Borkum Riffgrund 2, it would be our fourth wind farm project in Germany underlining our big commitment to that market."

The company has so far installed 3GW of offshore wind turbines, and plans to have installed capacity of 6.5GW within the next five years.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is a 50/50 joint venture of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Vestas Wind Systems.
