The awards come from FY2012 funds via FTA’s National Fuel Cell Bus Program. Funding for the new projects will be administered through the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) and Calstart.

DOT secretary Anthony Foxx said, "The Obama administration is committed to investing in projects that bring cleaner, greener transportation options to more Americans and help our nation compete globally in the 21st century.

"These investments will continue to expand innovative transportation alternatives so people across the country can get across town safely and efficiently."

The projects include:

A grant of $1.8m was awarded to AC Transit to extend fleet operation and support.

Over $2.7m was given to Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority in Ohio and technology partners BAE Systems, ElDorado National and Ballard Power Systems. This grant will help build a next-generation fuel cell bus and demonstrate it in transit service in the greater Cleveland area for two years.

More than $4.2m has been awarded to Sunline Transit Agency and its industry partners ElDorado National and BAE Systems to develop and demonstrate a battery-dominant fuel cell bus based on a commercial hybrid platform.

Over $3.1m has been given to Tompkins Consolidated Transit Authority and technology partners ElDorado National, BAE Systems and Ballard Power Systems to build and operate a next-generation American fuel cell bus in a cold, northeast climate.

The remaining grants, which range from $189,000 to $691,000, were awarded among four transit projects in Birmingham, Alabama; Pasadena, California; Altoona, Pennsylvania; and Atlanta, Georgia.
