The installation is in line with the company’s SmartCurrents program, through which electric customers can communicate with DTE Energy.

The SmartCurrents program will provide detailed information about the customer’s energy usage and recognize power outages without their input.

DTE Energy’s new technology enables installed meters to provide remote monitoring of the electric distribution system and allow customers to better manage their energy usage and bills.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Smart Grid Investment Grant is providing an $84m funding for this project.

The grant, matched by DTE Energy, will enable the company to accelerate its deployment of Smart Grid technology.

DTE Energy vice president of distribution operations Vince Dow said the program allows the company to expand its service for both business and residential customers.

"This technology will allow us to quickly locate and reduce the length of power outages and other problems, virtually eliminate estimated bills through automated meter reading and remotely connect and disconnect service, which means faster, less intrusive service," Dow said.

As a result of the DOE funding, the company will have the opportunity to offer technology with in-home displays and high tech thermostats to nearly 1,500 customers.

US-based DTE Energy is engaged in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services nationwide.
