Bothe the companies are set to jointly issue a solicitation for proposals for the second major wholesale natural gas pipeline in this week.

This new gas pipeline will meet growing demand for the fuel in the Carolinas and possibly surrounding states.

According to solicitation, the new pipeline will expand Duke Energy and Piedmont’s access to competitive, secure, diverse and abundant supplies and enhance the reliability of future natural gas deliveries into the state.

With a target in-service date of late 2018, both the companies seek an initial natural gas pipeline capacity of around 900 million cubic ft per day.

By late 2014, the companies are expecting to select a proposal.

At present, North Carolina is served by a single wholesale interstate natural gas pipeline, which runs through the state.
