E.ON Hanse, the north German utility unit, has reportedly stated that it will increase gas prices for over 500,000 households by 15% on August 1, 2008. The E.ON subsidiary has said that an average household could pay an extra E200 for gas in 2008, after factoring in taxes.

The news source reported that E.ON’s Mitte unit is also increasing gas prices in central German states by 14%, while E.ON Avacon said that it will be increasing prices for 83,000 households in the Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt states.

Local German utilities are also expected to follow with price hikes by trying to match the increases announced by E.ON Ruhrgas, according to Reuters. E.ON Ruhrgas imports gas and sells it to shippers, local utilities and industrial users. Germany imports about 80% of its natural gas.
