Five other combustion turbines will be built in the region between now and 2010, with a total capacity of 900MW. Three will be at Vaires-sur-Marne in Seine-et-Marne and two at Montereau, also in Seine-et-Marne, France.

In Loire-Atlantique too, at the Cordemais thermal power station, EDF has just rehabilitated a third fossil-fuelled generating unit with a capacity of 700MW, bolstering security of supply in Pays de la Loire and Brittany. Before this, 600MW from the second production unit at Porcheville power station was brought back into service in December 2006.

Alongside this investment in peak and extreme peak generation facilities, EDF is building more thermal generating capacity in the form of three combined-cycle gas units, one at Blenod in Meurthe-et-Moselle and two more at Martigues in Bouches-du-Rhone of France.

Pierre Gadonneix, chairman and CEO of EDF, said: Setting up these new power units is part of the group’s program to relaunch investment and enhance security of supply.
