EDF Energies Nouvelles said that the supply of these modules will enable the company to secure part of its photovoltaic power plants construction program, both for its own use and for third parties in Europe, the US and Canada, until 2012. The modules provided by First Solar will be used primarily for ground-level photovoltaic plants.

This agreement is part of EDF Energies Nouvelles’s expansion strategy in the solar segment, which was initiated in 2006. To date, the strategy has seen the company acquire shareholdings in development companies, namely Fotosolar in Spain, RETD in Greece and, more recently, Photon Power Technologies in France.

According to EDF Energies Nouvelles, the photovoltaic market is experiencing rapid technological change that is being spurred on by incentive policies. The company hopes that the supply agreement will help it to stay at the forefront of the solar market.

The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
