UK-based power utility EDF Energy has announced a cut in its prices for its standard rate electricity customers of up to 12.5%. The average change is a reduction of 8.8%. The decrease will take effect from March 31, 2009.

According to the company, the reductions will apply in London, South East, South West, Wales and Scotland benefiting the vast majority of our standard rate customers across the country.

The price decrease means the average dual fuel EDF Energy household will see a reduction of GBP21 per year from energy bills, said the power company. In other regions, the company is offering some of the lowest tariffs on the market.

For a dual fuel credit customer, EDF Energy is between £53 and £75 cheaper than British Gas even after its recent price cut, claimed the company.

Eva Eisenschimmel, chief officer of people, organization and brand performance at EDF Energy, said: “In this time of volatile energy markets, EDF Energy continues to ensure competitive prices for our customers. In 2008, we passed on the lowest gas price rises of any of the major utility suppliers.”

EDF Energy claims to be one of the UK’s largest energy companies and a wholly-owned subsidiary of the EDF Group, one of Europe’s largest energy groups. It generates around 6% of the UK’s electricity, employ nearly 12,000 people, and deliver electricity to 7.9 million customer homes and businesses through our public networks.
