EDF said that pursuant to the European legislation transposed into French law, ERDF is required to provide for the development, operation and maintenance of the public electricity distribution network in France.
ERDF will have the decision making power in respect of necessary investments. As an independent company, it has to provide the assurance of fair and non-discriminatory access to the network for all users.
The network operated by EDF comprises of around 1.26 million kilometers of medium and low voltage lines and is claimed to be one of the largest in Europe. ERDF’s business will be carried out under the supervision of CRE, the French Energy Regulatory Commission.
