The power station is located in the Lorraine Region around 10 kilometers south of Thionville and near Metz. It started operations between 1952 and 1959, when three 55 megawatt (MW) steam turbines started service. Latter two more 125 MW units were included. The five operational units of the plant were operated through coal, diesel and blast-furnace gas.

By 2014 and 2015, the company intends to dismantle the station completely, it still needs to plan the procedure and schedule though. Only three units are to be dismantled, the rest two are the oldest and are no longer operational.

With many production plants around Lorraine Region, ArcelorMittal intends to construct a 40 MW power plant with 18 GE-Jenbacher internal combustion engines after the Richemont plant becomes offline.
