EPAL is a joint venture between Indian state-owned company Energy Efficiency Services (EESL) and UK-based EnergyPro (EP).
Said to be the first utility scale energy storage facility in Canada, the $25m project is designed to balance the power grid in Ontario as well as improve stability on Canada's largest transmission grid
The 28MW/14MWh battery storage project is being built and owned by Swiss lithium-ion battery developer Leclanché and development partner Deltro Energy.
EnergyPro managing partner Steven Fawkes said: “We are excited to be working with our joint venture partner EESL and Leclanché on this significant utility scale energy storage project.
“We see it as a first step to deploying energy storage solutions at a range of scales, something that will be essential to the energy transition in all economies.”
Interconnected to Canada-based municipal electricity distribution firm Toronto Hydro, the lithium battery storage project will provide services to the Independent Energy Systems Operator, which manages the power grid of the province of Ontario.
Leclanché CEO Anil Srivastava said: "We are exploring many additional ways to integrate Leclanché's advanced lithium battery solutions into stationary storage systems as well as new mobility applications such as EV charging stations, full-electric buses and urban transportation systems."
Meanwhile, Leclanché said that the partnership will support e-mobility mission of the Indian government.
