Peruvian utility Empresa de Generación Eléctrica del Sur (Egesur) has awarded a contract to Wärtsilä to convert a heavy fuel oil power plant to natural gas firing and move it several hundred kilometers.

The Calana power plant is equipped with four Wartsila 18V32 reciprocating engines operating on HFO. Wartsila will dismantle the plant, package and transport it from Tacna, Peru to Indepencia, Pisco, in Peru and carry out engineering, civil works, installation, engine overhaul and commissioning to convert it to natural gas firing.

Egesur is relocating the plant to take advantage of the natural gas supply pipeline coming from the Camisea gas reserves. When commissioned later this year, the converted plant will supply electricity into Peru’s interconnected North-South national grid.
