The project, which is planned to be carried out between 2014 and 2019, includes a new sustainable surface water supply system featuring a raw water intake at the Meghna River about 30km east of Dhaka.

Plans also include a 21km raw water transmission pipe line and a new water treatment plant at Gandharbpur with a capacity to treat 500 million litres of water a day.

The project, which will also feature 14km treated water transmission pipelines, is complemented by a distribution network improvement component that is planned to be undertaken in 16 district metered areas.

EIB said the project will promote the development of social and economic infrastructure as well as improve availability, quality and reliability of water supply services in Dhaka.

The bank is granting the loan under the existing lending mandate for Asia and Latin America (ALA IV).

The project is the second lending operation to the public sector in Bangladesh from the EIB.

In November 2013, the bank gave €82m in support of more efficient power generation in Bangladesh.
