Tessag Industrie-Anlagen GmbH of Frankfurt is planning to upgrade its desulphurisation facility at the 15 year old 380 MW lignite-fuelled power station at Buschaus. Work is scheduled to start this summer for completion by end 2002 at a cost of 28 million euros. The facility will scrub 2 million m3/h of exhaust gases using a limestone washing technique, cuttiing SO2 emissions by more than 97 per cent and considerably reducing the operating costs compared to the existing Wellmann-Lord process. It will also support the use of salt lignite, which contains twice as much sulphur as ordinary lignite. In the plant, the exhaust gases are sprayed with limestone powder dissolved in water. The mixture combines with SO2 to form a gypsum, which can be recycled.
