The contract was awarded by VIVENS co-operative, an energy procurement joint venture that includes Netherlands Railways (NS), Veolia, Arriva, Connexxion and other rail freight operators.

Under the contract, Eneco will supply the Netherlands’ train system with 1.4TWh of electricity from domestic wind farms, as well as installations in Belgium and Scandinavia.

About 50% of trains will run on new green power in 2015 with plans to meet the full target of 100% by 2018.

NS chairman and CEO Timo Huges said, "From 2018, trains will be running on green power, enabling our 1.2 million passengers to travel truly green with zero emission transport."

The contract, which expires in 2025, is claimed to be the largest green energy deal yet signed in the Netherlands.

Eneco chairman of the board of management Jeroen de Haas said the company invests in sustainable power generation by building new wind farms.

"As from 2018, all electricity for the rail companies will be green. Half of this electricity will be Eneco HollandseWind, which is Eneco’s green electricity generated by Dutch wind farms," de Haas said.
