The warm farm in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the State of Oaxaca, employs 37 wind turbines with a capacity to generate 278GWh of electricity per annum.

It is the fourth farm to be financed by the IDB in the region since 2009, taking its total investment to $240m.

IDB project lead for structured and corporate finance department Brian Blakely underscored Mexico’s objective of reducing 50% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

Enel’s first wind farm in Mexico, whose construction was completed in June 2012 will help reduce carbon emissions by 172,265 metric tons annually.

The wind farm forms part of the country’s efforts to generate a greater share of its energy requirements from renewable sources.

Wind generation in Oaxaca has boomed in the recent past with installed capacity to reach 1.5GW by the end of 2012.
