The company will develop a mix of renewable projects which include 116MW of solar, 93MW of wind and 33MW of geothermal capacities in the country.

Enel plans to produce up to 1.18TWh of clean energy per year, which will be supplied to Chilean distribution companies

The tender is part of Chile’s National Energy Commission (Comisión Nacional de Energía) for 2.2TWh of power.

While the solar and geothermal plants will be located in the Antofagasta region, in Northern Chile, the wind farm will be located in the Araucanía region, in Southern Chile. These facilities are expected to start operations by 2024 and could help in offsetting 500,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Enel CEO and general manager Francesco Starace said: “We are extremely pleased about this new important award for the supply of electricity to Chilean customers.

“The combination of different renewable technologies and some thermal generation has proven once again the winning approach. To this end, it is worth mentioning that in the past few years we have grown, through Enel Green Power, a solid renewable footprint that includes hydro, wind, solar as well as completing the construction of the first geothermal plant in South America, Cerro Pabellón."

Recently, Enel entered Ethiopian market, after it was selected as the preferred bidder to build a 100MW solar project in Metehara. The tender was part of Ethiopian government’s Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP 2). As per the plan, the government expects to collect about 12GW in new hydro, wind, geothermal and solar capacity.
