The plant, which will be fully operational in 2009, is expected to be the most efficient in its class and contribute to lower emissions.

Compared to the previous oil-fired plant, emission of nitrogen oxides are expected to reduce by 61%, particulates and sulfur dioxide by 88%, with overall emissions expected to be 50% below the stringent levels set by European Union’s health and environmental legislation.

Enel said that the facility’s coal transport and handling systems are completely sealed, ensuring that the fuel never comes in contact with outside air. Enel’s total investment in the power plant amounts to around E2 billion.

Fulvio Conti, Enel’s CEO, said: The Torrevaldaliga Nord power plant makes a major contribution to diversifying the national energy mix and to the security of supply, to reducing emissions and enhancing the competitiveness of Italy’s electricity system, in line with the European energy policy.
