Energex said that the upgrade is designed to both increase the electricity capacity to the area and improve network reliability. Brisbane’s eastern suburbs have reportedly seen an increase in power consumption over the past few years.

The utility noted that the new underground cables will allow it to continue to deliver a reliable electricity supply by providing its technicians with more switching options to restore power faster after unexpected damage to the network.

Energex said that it has already installed more than 4400km of new underground electricity cable in southeast Queensland as part of a A$4 billion five-year capital expenditure program.

For the 2007-08 financial year, Energex is reportedly investing around A$800 million on upgrades to its electricity network while a further A$300 million-plus has been set aside to maintain and operate the network.
