The company will provide these batteries, which are specifically certified for use in nuclear power plants, for installation at the nuclear power plants under construction in Sanmen, Shanzi province and Haiyang, Anhui province.
The nuclear power reactors for which Enersys will be supplying batteries are among the first of sixty reactors planned to be built in China utilizing the Westinghouse AP 1000 third generation nuclear power technology.
EnerSys plans to produce the first of these batteries at its Hays, Kansas facility. However, its new Chongqing, China plant, which is currently under construction, will be used for the future production of these batteries for the Chinese market. The company plans to begin the delivery of these batteries in early 2011.
John Craig, chairman, president and CEO of EnerSys, said: “This contract is significant for EnerSys. These are the first of the planned sixty reactors utilizing this technology, which represents a potential $150m in batteries for these facilities.”
