Operated by Eni’s wholly-owned subsidiary Eni North Africa, the well will reach a total depth of 14,500ft after drilling is complete.

The company will also test a new geological play in the EPSA IV 2008 Contract Area A.

Eni said the exploration well will be the first of an onshore drilling program, which will continue untill 2013.

In September 2011, Eni was the first global firm to restart production through the Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture in the Abu Attifel field. Eni and NOC hold 50-50 interest in the joint venture.

In December 2011, Eni was the first company to lift the force majeur status in Libya.

The firm resumed offshore exploration activities in February 2012 by acquiring a 3D seismic survey.
