ENISA’s latest report, ‘Appropriate security measures for smart grids’, focuses on making sure smart grid technology is integrated into EU energy systems as safely, securely, and reliably as possible.

The report proposes security measurements that are designed to improve the minimal level of security across the EU energy ecosystem.

Its propositions target ten separate domains that are further divided into three levels of sophistication. Adoption of any particular set of security measures requires consensus and cooperation of smart grid stakeholders.

"A secure and robust energy network is essential for the continuous improvement and industrious operation of the European energy markets," the report noted.

ENISA executive director Prof. Udo Helmbrecht commented, "In order to reach the ambitious EU2020 objectives: 20% of renewable energy, 20% of CO2 emissions reduction and 20% increase in energy efficiency, it is a key issue to ensure that the roll-out of smart grids for distributed energy generation into future electricity grid is done in a secure way."
