Residents of the nearby area demanded the abandonment of the plan and the closure of the nuclear power plant at a public meeting held by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in the city of Dana Point.

Recently, Southern California Edison asked the agency for permission to repair and start Unit 2 of the reactor and run it at reduced power.

The NRC agency is now facing pressure from groups critical of the nuclear power industry to initiate a review of the proposal that may take months or even years to complete.

The agency is ‘denying the public any meaningful voice’ in the review to restart the plant, Friends of the Earth, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Committee to Bridge the Gap said in a joint statement, according to The Economic Times.
