In April, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) had requested EPA’s assistance to remove drums, containers, totes and super sacks of chemicals that were illegally disposed of at this open dump located in Cook County.

IEPA also requested that EPA remove lead contaminated soil that was found on site in in Markham from battery breaking operations.

EPA began removing and disposing of 2,000 tons of contaminated soil, and uncovered and safely disposed of 110 containers of hazardous material.

EPA said the State of Illinois began the cleanup last year by disposing of discarded tires, chemical drums, compressed gas cylinders, and numerous containers of solid and hazardous waste.
