Newswire reports say the dam is damaged but is currently intact. Officials are worried that if further damage is sustained it could add more water to a swollen river after Isaac, now a tropical storm, caused huge amounts of rainfall in the area.
Emergency services are now carrying out controlled releases to relieve pressure on the dam.
