“GreenCert is a highly-customizable suite of solutions that has evolved into the primary strategic focus of Evergreen,” said Thomas H. Stoner, Jr., chief executive officer of Evergreen Energy. “Based on projects, as well as customer and partner feedback, we continually improve our solutions to meet changing market needs. In addition, in the past six months, we have installed a very experienced sales team to enhance our partnerships and drive commercialization of the GreenCert solution.”
Miles Mahoney, president and general manager of C-Lock Technology, the Evergreen Energy subsidiary commercializing GreenCert, said, “We intend to sell GreenCert as an on-premise offering and as a hosted software as a service (SaaS) solution, both with annual licensing fees. Our solutions will require consulting and implementation services as well as the needed infrastructure for support, including hardware, which we expect will help incentivize our partners’ sales programs and sales channels.”
“Focused on deployment, we are working closely with our strategic partners. Recently expanded relationships include embedding GreenCert in IBM’s Solution Architecture for Energy and Utilities (SAFE); collaborating with Black & Veatch to target power generators; and starting a feasibility study for Shanghai Electric Power Company Ltd. commissioned by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency. Currently, we are in discussions with a strategic business development group to formulate a joint go-to-market plan to roll out GreenCert to the energy sector early next year,” added Mahoney.
Evergreen Energy has developed a three-phase plan to bring its GreenCert solution to market. In the first phase, GreenCert quantifies the company’s baseline emissions status and the accuracy of the methodology and data used. In the second phase, Evergreen Energy assesses and identifies the capital expenditure and operating expense improvements that drive efficiencies within the company or specific plant and determines the GHG savings associated with those efficiency improvements. This phase also elevates methods to reduce the uncertainty of the GHG measurement to improve accuracy. Combined, the first two phases deliver the GHG assessment and result in an understanding of the return on investment for employing the third phase. In this final phase, Evergreen Energy deploys the site-specific, highly-customized solution that enables the quantification and monetization of the emissions reductions and efficiency improvements. The deployed solution then enables new improvements to be quantified and monetized going forward.
Mahoney summarized, “Minimizing a utilities’ carbon footprint reduces operating and capital expense. Therefore, regardless of legislation, GreenCert has garnered interest in all three major world geographies. In the U.S., Evergreen has performed the assessments for two large U.S. utilities. In Europe, we are engaged in an assessment with a large utility company and are currently in phase 2. In Asia, we have introduced the GreenCert™ solution process and have received requests for proposals from several large companies from the utilities and manufacturing sectors. As such, we are successfully gaining traction globally.”
GreenCert Energy software solution will continue to be refined and enhanced. One of the key improvements to date is the ability to meet the data input and quantification requirements of the European Union Emissions Trading System’s GHG Monitoring and Reporting Guidelines. In addition, GreenCert is certified and installed on Windows and Linux platforms as well as two of the three major IBM hardware offerings: X-system and P-system. This enables greater computational process capabilities as well as eases entry into an expanded customer market base, as the majority of US-based energy utilities utilize P-system hardware.
Future upgrades are expected to address localization to meet current interest in Asia as well as integration with key components like business intelligence, business rules engine and asset management. Such enhancements would enable the GreenCert solution to market to energy distribution and transmission, supply chain, petroleum production and transportation companies. In addition, in the long term Evergreen Energy can further develop its GreenCert Agriculture software for possible carbon credit needs.
