In a press release, Oldenburg-based EWE commented that its acquisition would not only strengthen its energy division, but would also allow the company to introduce Turkey to European energy markets and infrastructures.

Ahmet Calik, CEO of Calik Group, commented. Our goal at Calik Group is to bring multiple services from one source into the Turkish market. With EWE we have found the ideal partner with the experience to support this goal. I am confident that our agreement will be good for both partners, as well as our country and the Turkish energy sector.

According to EuroPower, as a result of its acquisition, EWE has become the first German utility to gain an interest in a Turkish natural gas supplier. The publication also reported that Bursagaz has more than 530,000 contracts for supplying natural gas in the Bursa region of Turkey.

Dr Werner Brinker, EWE CEO, said: Bursagaz has established itself in the Turkish energy market and it is very profitable. With our shareholding in Bursagaz we are expanding consistently our international business.

According to EuroPower, Calik Group subsidiary Calik Energy previously held 90% of Bursagaz, while the region of Bursa held 10%.
