Mies also served as senior vice president of H&AI parent Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC). Prior to that, he was sector manager and deputy group president at SAIC.

Mies joined SAIC following a distinguished 35-year career in the U.S. Navy. As commander in chief of U.S. Strategic Command, he was responsible for command and control of the nation’s strategic nuclear forces supporting the national security objective of strategic deterrence. After completing his training for submarine duty, he served on two nuclear attack submarines and a ballistic missile submarine before commanding the nuclear attack submarine USS SEA DEVIL. He subsequently served in a wide range of command positions.

Mies is chairman of the board of directors of the Naval Submarine League and a member of the Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the National Academy of Sciences. He serves on the boards of McDermott International, Inc. and Mutual of Omaha. He also is a member of the boards of governors of Los Alamos National Security and Lawrence Livermore National Security, which oversee Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, respectively.

A native of Chicago, Mies earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy and a master’s degree in government administration and international relations from Harvard University.

Exelon’s board expanded its size to 16 members and appointed Mies to fill the vacancy.
