The company was alerted about the oil spill after a resident noticed an oil patch and dead vegetation around seven miles south of Doniphan in the southeast of Missouri State, reported Reuters.

Exxon’s spokeswoman said the cleanup work of the oil spill is nearing completion.

Missouri Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman said the oil release occurred from the installation of a guide wire for a power line pipe that was installed nearly 30 years ago.

"The guide wire was located almost directly on top of the pipeline and has worn down over the years," the spokeswoman added.

The Pegasus line with a capacity of over 90,000 barrels a day transports crude oil from Illinois to Texas in US.

Built in the late 1940s, the pipeline was closed down after almost 5,000 barrels of crude oil leak was reported on 29 March from the pipeline in Arkansas. The cleanup project due to the oil spill is still continuing.

The pipeline was not in operation when the Missouri spill occurred.
