Known as a ‘Highway/Byway’ proposal, the plan focuses on the SPP region as a whole, as opposed to the traditional transmission planning approach that focuses on local reliability issues. SPP operates as a regional transmission organization in Arkansas.

FERC said that the plan calls for costs to be allocated according to the voltage of the new transmission facilities.

Nick Brown, president and CEO of SPP, said: “Sharing costs and benefits of more transmission highways and byways will increase our ability to deliver lower-cost power to customers, allow us to make the most efficient use of the region’s diverse generating resources, and help us meet state and federal policy goals such as increased use of renewable energy.”
