The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) has stated its commitment to increasing power and water availability by a minimum of 8% annually, but annual estimates of gross domestic product and population growth in one of the northern emirates, Ajman, are 27% and 18%, respectively.

Hassan Al Ghasyah, executive director of supply at Fewa as quoted by Emirates Business, said: The abrupt development in the construction field now seen in the northern emirates is unplanned. Local authorities have not co-ordinated with Fewa on the precise water and power requirements.

The news source reported that restricted supplies of natural gas are causing electricity generation bottlenecks in some northern emirates, while there are also reports of delays in connecting new developments with utilities. This is reportedly causing tension between the government and developers.
