An independent review conducted last year recommended an approach that will see water meters in homes rise from 35% to 80% by 2020. To support this Fibrecity Holdings plans to roll out water meters to households, starting with Bournemouth, via its Fibre to the Home (FTTH) connections, which will allow the collection of real time data by the water companies. This initiative is the start of wider water leakage strategy that i3 Group has been developing over the last 12 months.

Elfed Thomas, CEO of i3 Group, said: “The benefit of water meters is clear as they help to monitor water usage and the specification of these meters means they can also be connected to our Fibrecity network to facilitate remote data capture by the water companies.

“Fibrecities are a technology platform for service delivery and so a perfect fit for water and other utility companies that want to introduce smart meters in line with Government initiatives. The fibre optic connection will allow them to access data in real time and provide the household with actual real-time use of all energy.”
