The power plant, which is considered to be largest in Finalnd, uses mixed waste collected from Uusimaa, a region that includes Helsinki and neaby locations, to produce 920GWh of heat as well as 600GWh of electricity annually, Xinhuanet reports.

In addition to replacing one of the Martinlaakso power plant’s production units, which will be decomissioned by 2015 at latest, the waste-to-energy plant will contribute to the climate change mitigation by reducing the use of coal and the amount of mixed waste ending up in the landfill.

The plant, which will process about 320,000t of waste every year, is expected to meet 30% of the electricity demand in Vantaa.

Additionally, the new power plant will reduce the use of fossil fuels for energy generation by 30% and the company’s carbon dioxide emission annually by 20%.
