On 8 July the Basque seaport of Mutriku, located between Bilbao and San Sebastian, Spain, witnessed what could turn out to be a historic day in energy generation history when utility Ente Vasco de la Energía (EVE) officially started the Mutriku wave power plant – the first such plant in the world to go into commercial operation, says EVE. It consists of sixteen Wells turbines supplied by Voith Hydro integrated in a new breakwater structure, resulting in a 300 kW output. The technology can be deployed in existing breakwaters, or in purpose-built structures, says Voith.
