India’s first homegrown nuclear reactor produced first power in September 1999, and commercial operations started in October.
The 220 MWe PHWR in Kaiga, Karnataka is being showcased as the first Indian reactor built fully with indigenous components. Work on the reactor started in 1988.
Three other nuclear reactors are under construction. A 220 MWe reactor in Rajasthan is expected to start operations later this year, followed by two more in 2000.
