NRG has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Tucson Electric Power, a sector of UniSource Energy Corp, to sell the solar power generated from the project.

The project will employ First Solar’s advanced thin-film photovoltaic technology, mounted on the company’s single-axis tracker system.

NRG Solar director James Kelly said the company and First Solar have built a very strong working relationship, starting with its first 21MW project in Blythe, California, to its most recently completed 20MW Roadrunner solar generating station in New Mexico.

"We look forward to working with First Solar on the Avra Valley project that, when completed, will help Arizona meet its renewable energy goals," said Kelly.

The company said the construction work will start from March 2012 and expects to complete Avra Valley by the end of 2012.
