The company is expected to begin construction of the project in the latter half of 2012 with the completion expected in 2013.
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) will purchase the energy produced by the project under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
First Solar vice president of project development in North America Brian Kunz said, "First Solar is very pleased to be working with SDG&E for the first time to deliver clean, renewable energy and create hundreds of construction jobs in Imperial County."
The company will use its advanced thin film PV modules for the construction of the project, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 80,000mt per annum.
First Solar and US Solar Holdings are the joint owners of the Campo Verde Project.
