Coal-fired utilities will use the sorbents, primarily sodium bicarbonate and trona to remove harmful pollutants, such as acid gases, in flue-gas treatment processes.

The collaboration will form the new entity, Natronx Technologies in New Jersey, US to produce, sell and distribute sorbents to users of dry sorbent injection (DSI) technology.

As per the US Environmental Protection Agency, about 20% of US coal-fired electric generation capacity will employ DSI technology, as part of compliance with air pollution regulations recently issued in March 2011.

Natronx intends to invest about $60m to build a 450,000 ton-per-year facility to produce trona sorbents by the fourth quarter of next year.
