According to the plan, the new combined heat and power (CHP) plant will cover 25% of Stockholm’s heat demand and 10% of the city’s electricity demand. The new plant is reportedly going to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by 800,000 tonnes per year, as it will be fired with biofuels.

Anders Egelrud, president of Fortum Varme, said: Vartan is an ideal location for the new plant, as it is located in the heart of the district heating network. The area also has other necessary infrastructure such as a harbor, railways, fuel storage space and chimneys. However, in the long term, also other locations must be considered in order to sustainably secure the energy supply.

The project to implement flue gas condensing will be launched as soon as the environmental permit comes into effect. The value of the investment in flue gas condensing technology is approximately E32 million.
