The new installation, which is located in the Red Hills area next to the city of Chennai, will produce Gamesa G58-850kW wind turbine and is equipped with an initial production capacity of 200MW per year. The company has contracts in India and neighbouring countries for a total power output of 60MW.

The plant is equipped with advanced production and management systems to reduce production timescales and costs. The industrial process will be complemented with the ongoing development of local suppliers for the supply of components and materials, Gamesa said.

Jorge Calvet, executive chairman of Gamesa, said: “The strategic international reinforcement which the start-up of production in India represents, especially in Asia, and the firm wager the company has placed on this emerging area. It is undoubtedly a market having outstanding wind energy growth prospects where we are undertaking significant long-term commitments and where we hope to attain a progressively larger market share.”

With this plant in India, Gamesa now has thirty production centers in Europe, Asia and the US, and a global workforce of around 6,500 employees.
