According to the Associated Press, the blast, which occurred on August 6, 2007, damaged 30 feet of pipeline, but did not cause any injuries. It was reportedly caused by a gas leak near Blagoevgrad, located 50 miles south of Sofia, Bulgaria.
Although the gas is provided by Gazprom, the pipeline is operated by Bulgaria’s Bulgartransgaz. The firm is now repairing the damaged section of the pipeline and hopes to resume the transportation of natural gas to Greece as soon as possible, RBC said.
According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, 80% of Greece’s gas consumption is sourced from Russia via Bulgaria. This totals some 2.7 billion cubic meters each year.
