The publication cited Gazprom’s deputy chief executive, Alexander Medvedev, as saying: In the near future there will be a deal to further increase the customer base on the British market.

No details of the company’s strategy were revealed, although Mr Medvedev is reported to have said that those attending the Wimbledon tennis tournament at the end of June will know about the company’s plans.

Industry observers are predicting that Gazprom has its sights set on Centrica. The Guardian reported that the Russian firm’s UK aspirations have long been associated with the company, which is headquartered in Berkshire, UK.

Gazprom’s plans may meet resistance from the UK government and authorities as, in the past, the company has been accused of using its market share and resources as political tools.

Nevertheless, Reuters reported that speculation regarding Gazprom’s plans had caused Centrica’s shares to jump significantly.
