GCC secretary general Abullatif Al Zayani urged the IAEA to send a specialized technical team to inspect the nuclear plant and investigate potential damage.

Al Zayani said that GCC states have been already warned about nuclear leaks from Bushehr plant may have damaging effects on the environment in the Gulf region.

Bushehr plant was idle until 1995, when Russia signed a $800m contract to complete the work on the facility.

The plant started operations in May 2011, following the completion of construction work.

The single Russian VVER-1000 reactor installed at Bushehr produces about 1,000MW of power, about 2.5% of Iran’s electricity usage.

Siemens has been contracted to construct two reactors, each producing about 1,200MW for the plant.
