The Durathon battery products are part of the company’s new energy storage business. Expansion of the manufacturing facility located in Schenectady, State of New York, US is expected to double its production capacity.

Talking about the expansion GE chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt said that the company expects the energy storage business to generate about $1bn in revenues annually in the coming years.

According to the company its new battery technology will provide energy storage options for a broad range of GE customers, including telecom and utility operators.

"We’ll continue to expand the business into new areas beyond telecommunications to build the next generation of energy-efficient buses, locomotives and mining vehicles around the world," added Immelt.

GE also announced a purchase agreement for 6,000 of these batteries to be delivered in 2013, with a South African engineering company, Megatron Federal.
