GE Energy is providing gas turbine emissions control technology to Endesa Italia to prepare the electricity utility to meet new emissions standards which come into effect in the Lombardy region of Italy from January 1, 2009.

Lombardy is enacting new standards that will limit nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide emissions to 30mg compared to the present levels of 50mg, a reduction of 40%.

Endesa’s Tavazzano combined-cycle power plant in the Lombardy town of Lodi, 30km southeast of Milan, is reportedly meeting these standards. GE retrofitted three Frame 9FA gas turbines operating at the Tavazzano facility with the DLN 2.6+ combustion systems. To meet Endesa’s requirements for a short-cycle project, GE has completed all mechanical installation in 21 days.

The DLN 2.6+ technology is reportedly capable of reducing combined-cycle emissions without using chemical systems, thus eliminating the possible releases of harmful chemicals into the environment.

In addition to the Tavazzano site, Endesa is also using three DLN 2.6+ system at its Ostiglia plant, which reportedly gives Endesa the largest DLN 2.6+ retrofitted gas turbine fleet outside of the US. With the latest installation, GE now has nine such systems operating in Italy.
