The function of Nucleus is to collect data related consumer’s household electricity use and cost from the utility smart meters and store the data for up to three years and present it to consumers using PC and smart phone applications.

Nucleus is the first product in GE’s Brillion suite of smart home energy management systems that include a programmable thermostat, in-home display, a smart phone application, and smart appliances for the entire home.

GE’s Brillion home energy management systems will provide the consumers with the option to automatically adjust thermostats or alter the consumption of GE Profile appliances in response to utility price signals that indicates escalation when demand is at its peak and decreases when demand is low, the company said.

The company claims that with further software upgrades Nucleus will be able to monitor water, natural gas, and renewable energy sources, as well as plug-in electric vehicle charging. Nucleus is expected to be commercially available in early 2011.
