Under the contract, the company can procure cost-effective wind energy from wind farms owned by EDP in southwest Oklahoma, which will cater energy requirements of more than 50,000 Georgia households.

The company will begin receiving the power starting 1 January 2016.

Commenting on the developments, Georgia Power president and CEO Paul Bowers stated the company continuously strives to evaluate power options to provide economical value to its customers.

"Adding wind energy to our generation mix underscores our commitment to a diverse portfolio that offers clean, safe, reliable, sustainable and low-cost electricity for years to come," explained Bowers.

Earlier in 2013, the company formulated the Georgia Power Advanced Solar Initiative (GPASI) to contract up to 210MW of solar power through long-term purchase power agreements with Georgia Power customers and solar developers.
