Solar

The solar PV generation in Germany peaked at a record high of about 15GW in May 2014.

GTAI cited market research firm EuPD’s figures which indicate that sales of solar storage systems in Germany may increase to 100,000 units by 2018 from 6,000 in 2013.

The agency said the modern and cheaper battery technology is allowing owners to store excess power in the day rather than feeding it into the grid at low prices and purchase it back at night when it is too expensive.

The feed-in tariffs, which are set to fall this summer, are also expected to play an important role in the predicted growth.

GTAI renewable energies manager Tobias Rothacher said balancing supply with demand in the grid presents operators with a significant challenge and leads to market price fluctuations.

"Many solar installations will have paid for themselves in the next couple of years and some will soon reach the end of their 20-year feed-in tariff contract," Rothacher added.

"A number of factors are coming together that will lead to a boom in PV energy storage solutions in Germany."
